A quick and foolproof method of mapping out surfaces to ensure equal spacing between motifs in any configuration. Use Gridfinder to mark your surface when equal spacing is required prior to stencilling, stamping, hand painting, applique, embroidery and decoupage.
Square and Diagonal GridFinder from the Stencil Library
Gridfinder is a plastic stencil in which grids of varying sizes have been cut. It allows the user to chart accurate regular spacing over an infinite distance.
Square and Diagonal GridFinder from the Stencil Library
Gridfinder examples Gridfinder is available in three sizes. Each Gridfinder has three distinct grids marked out with different symbols - square, diamond or circle. Each of these symbols can create a secondary grid depending on how the sheet is positioned. Placing the sheet square on to the wall will produce a regular grid (1 & 1a) whereas using the sheet on the diagonal will produce an offset one (3). This means that each sheet is capable of producing six different grids - see the table below for details of each sheet. All grids radiate out from a central point, which is cut into a star shape within a printed circle. Mark a starting point for the grid and place the star over it. To ensure that the Gridfinder is perfectly aligned onto the chosen surface, check the vertical lines with a plumb line or level and fix in place whilst the desired grid is mapped. Accurate right angles are drawn onto the sheet to ensure accurate alignment whichever configuration is used. Each equal spacing is determined by a shape cut into the film.
If the chosen spacing is defined by a circle then the grid will be mapped using circles only. Once the circles are marked, peel away the Gridfinder and reposition by placing a line of circles over a line of marked ones to identify where to reproduce the next set. This process repeats until complete. If the desired grid was depicted by square symbols, the same procedure would be duplicated using only squares. The final motif whether it be a stencil, stamp, embroidery, etc would then be placed over the mark. Each of these symbols can create a secondary grid depending on how the sheet is positioned (2). The same method of only marking one symbol is normally used when creating Harlequin diamonds (4), squares, vertical and horizontal stripes. With experience, reliable cross symbol spacings will be discovered. Gridfinder examples
